The PERKINS Family came to Cardiff from Somerset. William PERKINS was born probably about 1670 and in or around the village of Dunster, Somerset. A William Perkins married Honor JENKINS at Dunster on 12 November 1604 and I can find records for 7 children born to the couple: Honor 1699-1699, George 1700, Jane 1700, John 1702-1763, Honor 1704, Thomas 1706 and Elizabeth 1710. (This earlier research is based on entries in Parish records only and there is no further evidence to prove or disprove the lineage at this time until the family of John Perkins born 1774.)
The marriage of George PERKINS and Sarah PERKINS means there are two lines of research going back and a supposition that they may be linked again. Records are available for Carhampton, Dunster, Withycombe and other villages around this area of Somerset and while they seem complete there does seem to be a lack of marriage and burial entries for some of the PERKINS found on the Baptism records. Of course ther was now legal responsibility to register Births, Marriages or Deaths. Hopefully some records will appear in the future to provide positive evidence for the research.
John PERKINS was baptised at Dunster, Somerset on 4 October 1702 and was the son of William PERKINS and Honor JENKINS. John's wife was named PITERNELL and there are records for 5 children born to the couple at Withycombe, Somerset: Ann 1724, William 1727, John 1731, Mary 1738 and Joan 1742. John was buried at Withycombe on 10 July 1763 and Pitternell on 3 April 1774.
Line of Descent to George Top of the page
William PERKINS was baptised at Withybush on 2 February 1727 the son of John and Pitternell. He married Mary BENNETT at Withycombe on 13 January 1760 and there are records for four children: Sarah 1760, Hanna 1768, William 1770 and John 1774-1848. William was buried at Withycombe on 16 May 1793 and Mary on 12 October 1800.
The link between George and Sarah could be through William's son William born 1770 and his marriage to Mary GRIFFITH but there is no record of a son named John born to them and their marriage date (1792) is a year after the date recorded for Sarah's father. There are records for four children born to William and Mary GRIFFITH: Thomas 1793, Ann 1796, William 1797, William 1806 and Hannah 1810. Hannah married George's brother John, son of John PERKINS and Mary HILL born 1806. They were married at Withycombe on 24 September 1829.
John PERKINS was the son of William PERKINS and Mary BENNETT and was baptised at Withycombe on 1 May 1774. John married Mary HILL at Withycombe on 14 May 1794 and their children were baptised at Carhampton, Somerset: William born 1803, John born 1806, James born 1809, George born 1814. They are living at Withybush in 1841 and John's occupation is recorded as an ag lab. John and Mary were both buried at Carhampton; John on 26 May 1848 and Mary on 16 August 1852.
Line of Descent to Sarah Top of the page
John PERKINS baptised on 6 June 1731 at Withycombe was the son of John PERKINS and Pitternell. John married Sarah HURWOOD at Withycomb on 22 February 1757 and I can find records for three children William 1758, Sarah 1760 and Jane 1765. There is a baptism record for William at Withycombe on 15 January 1758 but no marriage record to date. John Perkins baptised at Dunster on 27 February is recorded as the son of William PERKINS and his wife Mary. Too early to be William Perkins and Mary Griffiths unless John was born before their marriage in 1792 although there is usually a comment to this effect in the Baptism Register.
John PERKINS baptised 27 February 1791 at Dunster, son of William and Mary PERKINS married Jane THRESHER at Withycombe on 22 June 1816. John and Jane had nine children: Mary 1817, William 1818, Sarah 1820-1892, Jane 1822, George 1825, Ann 1828, Lucy 1830, John 1832 and James 1836. John died in 1837 and was buried at Old Cleeve on 1st July 1837, he was living at a place called Binham at the time of his death, he was probably a labourer at The Grange or Farmhouse. Jane is recorded at Binham, Old Cleeve in the 1841 census. She is employed as an agricultural labourer and has seven of her children with her:William and Mary aged 20, George 15, Ann 13, Lucy 11, John 8 and James 4. Jane is still living at Old Cleeve in 1851 with sons William and James and daughter Ann, all four of them are recorded as working on a farm. In 1861 Jane has moved to Carhampton Village to live with her daughter Sarah, herself now widowed. Jane is still working as an agricultural labourer and daughter Lucy is also living with her and Sarah and Sarah's children. Lucy is working as a dairy maid. Jane was buried at Carhampton on 22 March 1868.

Thomas died from polio at The Sanatorium in Cardiff on 4 June 1903, his probate record shows he left effects of £220. Mary continues to live at Swinton Street. In 1911 the census records that she had 8 children with seven still living. At the address with her are her son Ernest 25, an assistant timber machinist, daughter Emily 16, a dressmaker and son Thomas who is still at school. She is also providing lodging for a woman called Alice McIndeor (or similar) aged 37 and married. Recorded also is Joseph Perkins nephew aged 36 single coal trimmer single. Howard also is with his parents and siblings at 13 Swinton Street in 1901 and went, with Gertrude to Boldmere St Michaels, Aston, Sutton Coldfield. He is recorded as a schoolboy at the orphange. Howard returns to Cardiff and works for a time as a tram conductor before enlisting in 1916 as a rifleman in KRRC and later transferring to the Rifle Brigade.
